Gladiators have a major part of history in Ancient Rome. Most likely Gladiators came from the Etruscans. The Etruscans were before the romans in central Italy. When a war leader or a king would die, as part of a funeral ceremony two warriors would fight to death as a way to honor the warlike spirt of the leader.

Threw out the years Romans carried out the Gladiator tradition from the Etruscans. Romans played Gladiator games rarely but they were always held as a funeral ceremony. The senate was able to sponsor two Gladiator games per year by law. There were three different ways to get Gladiators. Slaves, prisoners, and free people who volunteered.

To become a Gladiator you would have to go to Gladiator School. Were you would get a new name, a stage name. These Gladiator Schools were privately own. The name of the staff of the Gladiator Schools is called the Lanista A Gladiator would start by training with wooden weapons. There were many different types of Gladiator about fourteen different types of Gladiator. The heavily armed types of Gladiators included Gaul, Hoplite, Samnite, and Secutor. These all had had a helmet and a sword. There was also the light armored Gladiators who came in two groups. The Thracian who would wear amour to know amour and would have a little wooden shield and a little curved sword. And also there were the retiarius who were naked except for a little pice of cloth to cover them. In one had they would hold a net of weights and in the other hand they would hold a trident. Champion Gladiators were consider celebrates like the singers and actors today.

On holidays in ancient Rome they provided entertainment which was either theater performances or gladiator fights. They were also for funerals of nobles or leaders of Rome. Gladiators were first from the Etruscans who were the people that had the land before the Romans. Gladiator fights were rare until Caesar came to power and he made them more popular. Then when Augustus came to power he had them only 8 times in the sixty years he was in power. Unlike how they portray them in the movies gladiator fights were not very popular.
